Physio - practice beyond present perspective.

There's always a conflict between ' being successful' and 'seen as successful'.
Physiotherapy in India is already moving towards ' being successful' in treating and managing  many health issues in a way that is cost effective , side effects free and has lasting effectiveness.
It is a field of work where exercise prescription based on knowledge of modern medical sciences can be used as prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.
It's a science which is deep rooted into research based evidence. If anyone really understands importance of exercise in modern lifestyle perspective, he/ she would know the importance of Physiotherapeutic exercise plan over any other form of exercise plan. It is case specific and patient specific.
This is also a field of work which can help in community based physical rehabilitation using limited resources.
Importance of planned exercise schedule in managing mental health issues is also well documented.
In a country like India we must look for taking Physiotherapy to heights where no other country may have done so that we can ensure that many of the modern day  health issues are resolved within the cost limitation and before complications develop.
This is a time where many nations are challenging notion of necessary versus unnecessary surgeries.
Physiotherapy is being brought to the forefront in result oriented approach to reduce usage of medicine and surgeries wherever possible.Recent research papers are helping the cause.
In such scenario rather than trying to adopt regulations which were adopted by these countries decades ago and on a verge of change now, we must jump ahead and look into the futuristic evaluation of Physiotherapy. We should move from Physiotherapist to 'Physio Practitioners'.
An integrated course like Doctorate in Physical Therapy needs to be introduced to reassure professional competence. This shall also avoid confusion regarding practice principles of PT among other medical professionals and patients. An integration approach towards existing professionals may be used to keep them at same level as future professionals.
It is also important that to mettle our integrity Physio practitioners must refrain from any unethical practice.
Showing flamboyance within our own fraternity is easy but to prove to the world we must first highlight that our basic science has the scope and charisma to take the challenges of this vast health care arena.
Once we do that, Physiotherapy will be 'seen as successful'.

PT Awareness

Someone just called asking for a "regular Physiotherapy sitting". PTs, not enough is being done to make patients aware that PT is not a facility in the hospital it is a specialised field of work.

Physio as a preventive measure

Preventive Physiotherapy is not being used enough. Even though there is an increasing awareness on importance of exercise. Exercise as prevention from physical, mental and physiological health issues after thorough assessment by PT is need of our times.

PTs must convey to each and every patient personally that Physiotherapy is not about fixed protocols. We work on a base plan which is flexible enough to accelerate or decelerate depending on case progress.

Generalised Health Information is mostly misleading.

All those who want to share the idea of healthy living on social platforms must be careful. Propagating generalised information on Anatomy, Physiology, Nutrition and even Exercise is showcasing you as a specialist but probably misleading someone who may link these threads in their own way. Talking to every individual and giving specific information is what makes you a true specialist in your field of work.

Printed Sheets/ Readymade exercise video is not Exercise Prescription

Pre printed, generalised exercise sheets can never substitute a case specific exercise plan, but they seem to be popular with both PTs and patients.

Walking during severe back pain

LIMITED walking or mobility during an episode of severe back pain is mostly helpful with very few exceptions.

Bed rest isn't always necessary.

One should always consult an experienced Physiotherapist
before following any treatment plan that includes US + IFT + Diathermy for 10 days  along with bed rest. Ultrasound Therapy, IFT, Diathermy is not to be used like a fixed dosage of Pain Medication.

Patients must understand that Electrotherapy is only a part of #PHYSIOTHERAPY.Treatment with Electrotherapy alone is actually missing out on  most important aspect of PT that is BIO MECHANICS.

Most cases don't need MRI but if an MRI is taken then it shouldn't become a psychological barrier.

Physiotherapy and Bio Mechanics

A physiotherapist is well equipped with knowledge of human body structure and function. A physio learns subjects of modern medicine and their implementation in physio therapeutic means of treatment. Use of Electro therapy compliments well with exercise and manual techniques of treatment.

The knowledge of Bio Mechanics leads to expertise in analysis of physical functions and prescription of exercises or Manual Therapy interventions. Prescription of exercise is done based on individual capacity and requirement of patient.
