Diabetic Polyneuropathy

Diabetes leads to a number of physical and physiological changes, diabetic foot is one of them.Diabetic foot is an umbrella term used to describe a number of problems that a chronic diabetic may face in the feet.People with a long history of diabetes often complain that while walking, they feel 'cloud' like sensation under their feet, this is due to altered sensory nerve conduction.Pain under the heel, burning, tingling, numbness or even faulty body balance can all be a result  of 'diabetic polyneuropathy'. Polyneuropathy as the name suggests, is a condition which symbolises improper  electrical conduction through multiple nerves in the foot.Swelling, delayed healing of injuries, change in the shape of toes/ toe nails are common features that describe this condition.Simple wounds get infected and may also form gangrene if proper care is not taken.Prevention is better than cure when it comes to diabetic foot.Regular foot examination, maintenance of hygiene and regular exercise from early stage help in prolonging the initiation of the above signs and symptoms.Exercise of the foot helps in achieving required fluid movement and thus preventing many of the complications.Electrotherapy such as TENS can be used by your physio to regulate the nerve related issues.Lymphatic drainage, compression bandage and many such treatments may help in controlling the damage process depending on patient's condition and need. There are special use materials eg:diabetic socks, stockings etc.which can be prescribed by your physio as and when required.

Neck Pain -Helmet May Worsen It

If you keep weight over a delicate structure,it is bound to compress the structure due to gravity. The impact of compression may be increased if the duration is more.We should apply the same logic to understand that a heavy and ill cushioned helmet may lead to pressure over the neck and upper back. This pressure can cause more problems if you keep the helmet on for long rides. We cannot isolate helmet as the only cause of neck pain in people; but it definitely is a contributing factor in those who use heavy helmets. This kind of pain is generally due to muscle spasm of the upper back and neck muscles in the beginning. If the usage continues for a long period and other factors such as computers, incorrect posture also come into play, pain may come due to vertebral joint involvement as well.Using a light weight yet safe helmet can help you staying away from the above mentioned consequences. This is possible only if you buy good quality certified helmets. Even after taking all care at work and while using helmet, if you end up in a neck problem then do not worry we are always there to help you.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

To put it simply, we can describe Rheumatoid arthritis as a condition which leaves the joints inflamed and can affect body organs as well.Autoimmune (self immunity) system of the body plays a role in the onset of this disease.Any age group can get this disease but middle aged women are more prone .Certain tests and examinations are required to confirm the diagnosis, this includes Rheumatoid factor and C-reactive  protein testing. Most common symptoms of RA include bilateral (both sides of body) joint pain, morning stiffness of joints and fatigue.Physiotherapy can play a major role in maintenance of joint strength and structure.Regular exercise (under guidance of a physiotherapist) along with thermal/cold modalities help in reducing inflammation and pain.If regular exercises are not followed, advanced stages of the disease may see deformation of joints. In addition to joint related exercises, cardiovascular fitness and endurance need to be emphasized upon.Regular physical assessments by a physiotherapist help to track the physical aspects of this disease.Rheumatoid Arthritis should be thus understood as a complex condition which associates with multiple body systems. The medical approach is mostly multi disciplinary, physiotherapy is one of those.

www.physicalhealthconsultants.com

This blog has been created to present before you some simple facts - about physiotherapy in relation to physical well being. This is neither associated with any groups nor institutes. It is an attempt to make you understand the very facts about physiotherapy such as "Physiotherapy-when and why?"The main purpose of this effort is to provide information on physical health/well being in the local context. The inputs and information will be largely related to a common man's day to day needs. These blogs may not necessarily include scientific terminology and medical language. Finally it needs to be clarified that the blog title does not make the author any representative of the physiotherapists all around the city. The title has been chosen out of few available possibilities and also as a matter of love for the city that has constantly produced some of the best physiotherapists in the country.
Yours Truly,
Dr. Shailendra Kumar Saxena PT
