Shoulder problems may be broadly classified into two
1.Age related
2.Injury/Work related
Age related pain of shoulder is very common and leads to restriction of movement. This is often termed as FROZEN SHOULDER.Your physio may use certain manual tests which may help in diagnosing the exact cause of movement restriction. If manual tests are inconclusive, you may be referred for X ray or Scan depending on need. Most of the cases of shoulder pain in elderly may test your patience due to the slow speed of recovery. Its further affected if patient is a diabetic.Once on course of treatment you are supposed to follow it regularly for few days, it may comprise electrotherapy modalities, exercises and manual intervention.
Injury of shoulder, particularly in athletes is another common reason for shoulder related physio visit. In both cases i.e overuse or acute injury, the problem gets worsened because of delay in meeting your physio. These injuries need to be immediately attended to but in most cases athlete tries to overcome pain and continue with sport activity.Sometimes injury may worsen eg:a moderate muscle tear may get more complicated just because of continuing with the sport activity. In sports injuries, cause of injury eg. way of falling or impact of force may give helpful clues to diagnose it.Many modern approaches and techniques have made present day physio well equipped with better treatment for shoulder related sports injury.Rehabilitation of this kind of injury is done with two things in mind i.e. part of the shoulder complex which is involved and the sport that this sportsperson plays.
This blog is an effort to emphasize the importance of physiotherapy in physical well being. A simple language sans medical terminology has been used to make the information understandable for the reader. Readers are requested, not to jump to any conclusions about their health merely reading these blogs. One should always seek medical advice in case of any health concerns.

Wrist Pain /injury

Wrist pain is becoming common due to two major factors
1.Overuse of gadgets, particularly PC at work
1.Overuse of gadgets, particularly PC at work
2.Gym induced injuries
Both of the causes are avoidable if we take a few precautions but work pressure at office and over enthusiasm at gym does all the damage.
Well once you get the pain then instead of doing too much Internet research on your own or trying to cover the pain temporarily with unnecessary medication, you should get it checked by your physio. Proper assessment will help in specifying the cause of your problem. There are many factors that may lead to this kind of pain
SynovitisCarpal Tunnel Syndrome
De Quirvain's syndrome...
to name a few. Different approaches to treatment may be needed depending on the cause of pain.Few cases may need further investigations to rule out rheumatoid arthritis or other factors. If mobility is restricted due to pain your physio may use manual techniques otherwise most of the cases need simple anti inflammation and pain reduction approach followed by exercise based on need.

PAIN FREE 2013... Doing even better in 2014
Dear All,
May this year bring joy, health and peace around the world.I would like to remind you that good health comes with happiness. So spend a lot f time with your loved ones to stay happy and healthy. When good people are around you, good things will fall in place. Thanks for reading the blog in such large numbers, this encourages us to write better...
Today on 21 June 2013, it gives me great pleasure to write that we have achieved what we promised. We have succesfully managed almost cent percent cases to have six pain free months .A big thanks to all those, particularly slip disc cases like Mr.A and Ms S for showing faith in us when they were already told that surgey remains the only option for recovery. We are not using any out of the world techniques as many people claim to implement. We just want to show how even basic physio treatment accompanied with adequate lifestyle changes can help in physical ailments.
Today on 21/2/14 we proudly announce that both our above mentioned patients have avoided surgey and are back to normal life.In fact Ms. S is back to dancing Salsa and Cha Cha ,she is a dance teacher.Few other cases were able to avoid surgical intervention in the past few months. This support and faith of our patients gives us energy to go on and keep giving our best.

MRI, X Ray, Vitamin D, Uric Acid!!! What test should I undergo?
When pain is unbearable, its always difficult to keep things simple. These days its almost trendy for both medicos and patients to try and make a disease or condition bigger by using the most unheard terms and taking the most expensive tests available. For patients who like to complicate things, I would like to say that half knowledge is always dangerous; so do not come to conclusions by searching your symptoms on Internet. For practitioners, well there is nothing to say because most of the sincere and experienced doctors of any field or specialty try to give the best to their patients... No one likes to add to a patients agony.Talking of trends and terminology,MRI is one of the most discussed medical term in a variety of situations and scenarios.MRI is not a treatment, its just an imaging technique but some people come with severe back or neck pain and ask if taking an MRI may help in correct diagnosis. Most of the experienced practitioners understand that a proper manual assessment and proper look at signs and symptoms is sufficient to diagnose the underlying problem.MRI is a tool that has come into existence only recently and is really helpful in precise diagnosis of Disc Prolapse or Joint related conditions etc. but one should understand that very few cases really need MRI based diagnosis. So do not insist on taking an MRI when you walk into a clinic with pain rather have faith in your doctor and his/her diagnostic skills. If situation demands you will be anyways referred for MRI.At the same time there are some clinical conditions other than joint and disc problems also where MRI may be the most accurate diagnostic tool so if your doctor feels that it is absolutely required then do not think too much, just follow as advised.

Plan your fitness program
Dear reader do you fall in any of the following categories:
Planning to start a fitness regime?
Starting exercise after a few years gap?
Training with weights for a well structured muscle bulk?
Think that exercise works only when you sweat or it hurts?
Trying to eradicate your back pain with exercise told by your friend?
Want to get fit so bought a treadmill and bicycle ergometer at home?
Have diabetes, walking to reduce your sugar levels but your knee pain is increasing?
If your answer to any of the above questions is yes then make sure you visit your physio to understand your physical capacities and limitations.Proper physical assessment and advise will ensure that you do not do any harm to your body while doing exercise. If not, you may end up in the so called "Gym induced" or "Training induced" injuries. The above mentioned condition may have consequences such as rotator cuff injury, ligament tear, disc prolapse and even cardiothoracic problems.Everyone who wants to exercise, for what so ever reason should realise the importance of a thorough assessment by a physiotherapist.Exercise is like medicine, self administration is dangerous.

Indian Physiotherapists: Among best Physios in the World
If you decide to take physiotherapy, make sure you get treated by a practitioner who has a degree in physiotherapy i.e Bachelor in Physiotherapy B.P.T .Further qualifications such as M.P.T specialization in Neurology,Sports, Orthopaedic and Musculo skeletal,Cardio thoracic etc. are an added advantage for you as a patient. Ph.D in various physio fields is available but you may still not find many Ph. D physios practicing as clinical physios in India.Sadly because of better opportunities abroad and lack of awareness about physiotherapy in India, many physios look for overseas opportunities every year. When compared to counter parts in most western nations,Indian physios find themselves as competent and qualified as anyone else.Though some private colleges around the country are not really at par with standards of education but that is just a handful.Anyways such colleges exist for all other professional courses as well for reasons well known to all Indians.
A physiotherapy student spends close to 6-8 years to complete graduation, internship and post graduation.During the course some of the main subjects are
Human Anatomy
Physiology
Biochemistry
Sociology
Psychology
Medical Electronics
BIO MECHANICS
Pharmacology
Pathology
Microbiology
ELECTRO THERAPY
EXERCISE THERAPY
General Medicine
Orthopaedics
Neurology
General Surgery
Community Based Rehabilitation
Preventive Social Medicine
Allied Health Sciences
Basic Sciences
Research Methodology
Exercise Physiology
Electrodiagnosis etc.
P.T application in various fields eg. Physio in neurology, Physio in cardio thoracic conditions,Physio in Gynaecology,Pre and post surgical Physiotherapy are all individual subjects. These subjects and time duration of course may vary a little from university to university.Compulsory internship and training at hospitals is a part of standard physio education in India. We hope above information may give you an idea of what to expect from your physio.

Rehabilitation for Osteoarthritis of Knee
One of the most common causes of joint pain in old age "Osteoarthritis" is a result of general wear and tear of joints.Though it is mostly considered as an age related ailment,it may be seen in younger people due to various causes.Knee joint is one of the most commonly involved areas.Excessive body weight may further aggravate the problem. In early stages this may lead to intermittent pain after long walks or stair climbing, later pain may increase in intensity and frequency.Manual assessment,X rays and other radiology techniques are helpful in diagnosing the arthritic knee. One may feel a mild creaky sound while bending the knee, this is due to friction between the constituting parts of the knee(mainly bones).Pain can be controlled with use of Electrotherapy modalities including heat therapies but the rehabilitation remains incomplete without a proper exercise follow up.Most of the exercises are simple enough to be done at home after a few days of practice in presence of a physio. One should not try self exercise without proper medical advice. While doing self administered exercise generally you may not be able to judge -'how much is too much'.If the pain is ignored for a long time the joint continues to deteriorate further and may end up in a stage where conservative treatment remains no longer effective.
